Cleansing is a pretty big deal. It forms the basis of our skincare routine, removing dirt, makeup and SPF while simultaneously prepping the skin for treatment products. So, if we don’t properly cleanse, the rest of our routine can’t work effectively, leaving pollutants behind that can cause bumps, breakouts and congestion.
The key to super clean, balanced skin? A double cleansing routine that involves an oil-based cleanser. Fortunately, we’ve got just the product for the job: Expert Replenish Squalane Cleansing Oil. The even better news? It just launched in the UK!
Scroll on for a breakdown of oil-based cleansing, the benefits it offers, how it differs from traditional methods, and all the ways it can improve skin health.
What Is Oil Cleansing And How Is It Different?
There are generally two types of cleansers within the cleansing category, water-based and oil-based. Oil-based cleansers are formulated using plant oils and emulsifiers that act as lipophilic solvents, meaning they’re attracted to other oils on the skin (this is where the ‘like-attracts-like’ rule comes into play). Because of this, they effectively break down other oil-based products like makeup, skincare and sunscreen.
Water-based cleansers contain surfactants, which interact with dirt and oils to break them down, so they can be rinsed from the skin.
Both formulas work on their own, but for ultra-clean purified skin, it’s best to double cleanse with an oil-based cleanser initially, following up with a water-based gel, lotion or cream. This two-step method also ensures heavy makeup and thick sunscreens are completely removed from the skin.
What’s Inside Expert Replenish Squalane Oil Cleanser?
Our Squalane Cleansing Oil is a silky, lightweight formula ideal for all skin types, especially those looking to enhance nourishment. And because it is developed with the Skinstitut Medical Advisory Council, it carries an all-important dermatologist’s seal of approval.
With a base comprised of a number of botanical oils, including Jojoba, Sunflower, Macadamia and Rosehip, the oil also includes Kakadu Plum and Coenzyme Q10 for an antioxidant boost. And then there’s the hero ingredient, Squalane. We source ours from olives and use it because it’s structurally similar to the natural moisture found within our skin.
Can I Use An Oil Cleanser If I Have Oily Skin?
In a nutshell, absolutely! Oil-based cleansers are great for oily and acne-prone skin as they work to remove excess sebum (remember the like-attracts-like rule?) So, not only will an oil-based cleanser rebalance your skin, it’ll whisk away SPF and makeup that – if left on the skin – could trigger further breakouts.
And, because Expert Replenish Squalane Cleansing Oil is lightweight, it rinses clean, ensuring there’s no residue – just soft, cared-for skin and a well-nourished barrier. Win-win.
How And When Should I Oil Cleanse?
Oil cleansing is most commonly incorporated into a night cleanse because of its ability to remove makeup and sunscreen with ease. But here’s a hot tip: it’s also great during the morning! Let’s break it down:
Squalane Cleansing Oil can be used in the morning to gently cleanse off everything applied the evening before, which will leave your skin soft and supple, ready for the rest of your morning routine. It’s also a great medium for a little bit of facial massage – amazing if you’re prone to puffiness.
As for the evening, think of oil cleansing as the first step in your double-cleansing routine. Apply three to four pumps on clean dry skin and massage it in to melt makeup, SPF and skincare. Emulsify with a little water, rinse, and follow up with your favourite gel cleanser.
